When you hear the word commitment to Christ, do you think you must attend church every Sunday? Jesus only asked us to consider one thing. Vincent and Valerie discuss commitment in this episode of Couples Pursuit.

They pray that the words in the scriptures come alive and rejuvenate their souls as they consider the cost of being a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

What it Means to Follow Jesus

If you’re not married, all you need to be a committed follower of Christ is to prioritize him above all else, including your family members, and to love your neighbor as yourself (Luke 14:25-27).

Jesus emphasizes that we must bear our own cross and follow Him, making Him the Lord of our lives.

Reassurance from Scripture

Matthew 26:36-40 reassures us that if we love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and love our neighbors as ourselves, we don’t have to worry about displeasing God.

Jesus knows that we are susceptible to making idols out of things, but He reminds us in Exodus 20:3 not to have other gods besides Him.

Commitment Can Be a Good Thing

When we put our first responsibility to God in order, he will take care of everything else.

We don’t have to worry about our daily needs because He promised to provide for us. Committing to Jesus transforms not only our relationship with Him but also our relationships with others.

The Seed Gets Snatched Away

As followers of Christ, we must be mindful of the condition of our hearts. Sometimes, our emotions might make us feel committed, but we must ensure that our commitment is genuine and deep-rooted.

When our hearts are fertile ground for God’s word, we can produce mature fruit and stay committed even during testing times.

The Cares of Life

The cares of this life can take people away from the Christian faith.

We must recognize that they will come and try to maneuver them instead of getting swallowed up. Luke 14:28 tells us to count the cost before committing to being a follower of Christ, considering the resources and dedication required to complete the journey.

Accepting Jesus as Your Lord and Savior

If you don’t know Jesus as your Lord and Savior, we urge you to get to know him. John 3:16-17 and Romans 10:9 promise salvation to those who believe in Jesus and accept him as their Lord and Savior.

By praying and confessing to Christ, you enter into a relationship with him and become part of the family of God.

Conclusion

Following Jesus is a decision that requires commitment and dedication.

The price of discipleship may be high, but the rewards are eternal. As you commit your life to Christ, seek out fellow believers, join a local church, and immerse yourself in His word.

Let us know if you’ve made this decision, and may God bless you on your journey as a committed follower of Jesus Christ.
